| Sundirt owes a debt to Messiaen’s Dyptique
for organ, in which the first movement portrays the turbulence of life
on earth and the second movement portrays celestial life (the latter
was incorporated into Quartet for the End of Time). Sundirt
follows suit, adding an introductory movement. The middle
(“earth”) movement is an exercise in cross-cutting block
construction, while the last movement is composed in layers that
independently untwine from the main strand. The premiere was on the campus of Indiana University. Thanks to Christiaan Crans for conducting. |
