The work of Messiaen has been hugely influential in my own process of musical self-discovery.  So, it was natural for me to want to pay tribute to Messiaen - Pieces d’Olivier was written to commemorate his 100th birthyear.  Originally I intended to write 100 short pieces, one for each year since his birth.  But it looks like I settled with 10 pieces, one for each decade.  Most of the movements reflect something about Messiaen’s music, either in technique or affekt (if one could use such a word to describe Messiaen!).
